An Afternoon with Lichtenstein.
Roy Lichtenstein that is. I have been craving to see this exhibition at the Art Institute of Chicago but missed the opening while traveling.
Lichtenstein magnificently created an art form from comics. His fascination with romance, American soldiers, Chinese landscapes and random objects within his work truly positioned Lichtenstein as an iconic American pop artist peaking in the 60′s. When farming through each piece, it is no surprise the source of inspiration behind his work was namely American advertising, consumerism and comic books. He heavily relied on the ‘Ben-day’ dot techniques that play on the eyes. When you see his work up close, the techniques and bold lines are flawless even down to the preliminary sketches he used to vision his large canvases.
I floated through each room exploring mirrors, comics, sketches and sculptures. Getting lost in his world through each decade and influence, I truly felt transported to an iconic time. I won’t spoil the exhibition, but below are just some highlights of my date with Lichtenstein!
